FWS Research Assistant & Writing Coach
Job Description:
Saybrook University is seeking a FWS Research Assistant & Writing Coach to join its Center for Writing and Academic Success.
Under the direction of the Director and Assistant Director of the Center for Writing and Academic Success, the Research Assistant & Writing Coach is responsible for (1) assisting with the collection and analysis of data for the Center and (2) providing one-on-one coaching to help students develop their writing skills.
Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Collaborating with Center administrators to gather data on Center events
- Data analysis and coding
- Sending regular reminders to staff to update WC Online notes so that accurate data is gathered
- Taking notes of weekly team meetings to identify ongoing staff needs
- Providing one-on-one coaching support
- Creating supporting documents and materials
- Writing case studies/reports about completed sessions
- Coordinating a time with students at least 2 days prior to the session
- Participation in weekly team meetings with writing center staff
- Completing training module(s)
- On occasion, help facilitate breakout rooms during Center events. If desired, writing coaches may collaborate with full-time staff to plan and organize student writing workshops.
This position will use technology such as e-mail, peer-to-peer video platforms, and learning management systems to facilitate and prepare for writing coach appointments. Answering phones/e-mail, other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher.
- Must be eligible for Federal Work Study (FWS).
- Writing Coaches must have competent college-level reading comprehension and writing skills.
- Writing Coaches must remain in good academic standing.
- Commit to a minimum of 8 hours per week of work.
Position Qualifications:
- Prior experience tutoring or teaching.
- Prior experience working with students remotely.
- Prior experience facilitating online workshops or seminars.
Physical Requirements:
The position requires regular access to the internet to check and respond to e-mails and collaborate on documents in the cloud. The position also requires regular use of video conferencing platforms such as Zoom to hold writing coaching appointments and communicate with the Center’s team. The Center for Writing & Academic Success requests that writing coaches locate themselves in an area with minimal background noise and have stable internet connections to promote a positive experience for the student.
