Fatty acids, antioxidants, and lipoproteins play significant roles in human health, and the quantification of these important molecules provide insights into metabolic and inflammatory processes that underpin a variety of pathologies.Job-Specific Responsibilities:We are seeking a Research Assistant (RA) to help with assessing fatty acids from large patient studies. The RA will be performing solvent-based extractions of fatty acids from human samples, performing GC-FID characterization of FA constituents, and then analyzing chromatographic data to measure relative levels of key FA’s. Following data analysis, results are compiled into reports for review with the lab manager. Tasks associated with routine GC maintenance, monitoring of consumables used, and efficient chromatography data analysis will be key to this role.The successful Research Assistant may also have opportunities to learn assessments of carotenoids/antioxidants and lipoproteins using HPLC-based methods and immunoassays, respectively. Other lab-related tasks may be assigned. This position will require a candidate with a willingness to learn chemical instrumentation and the requisite assays for measuring essential biomolecules and immunoassays such as ELISA or using chemical analyzer, all while gaining insights to the operations of a Harvard core facility and contributing meaningfully to a collaborative study. Job-Specific Responsibilities: As part of a collaborative research effort, this role contributes to long-term ecological studies on climate and environmental change through hands-on laboratory work and data analysis.Key responsibilities of this role include:<ol><li>Conduct sample preparation, image analysis, measurement, and analysis of ecological samples from old-growth forests. Evaluate samples using standard cross-dating procedures to determine data quality. Perform intensive microscopic or similar sample analysis in the laboratory to collect sample data with a high degree of skill and precision.</li><li>Assist the Principal Investigator (PI) with additional quality-check data analysis, including creating ring-width chronologies, in preparation for data management and archival in the Harvard Forest data archive. This work will also enable successful transfer of data at the end of the project to publicly held databases such as the DendroEcological Network. This faculty position supports the Civil and Construction Engineering program by delivering high-quality instruction, laboratory experiences, and instructional materials that promote student learning and achievement of established outcomes. The role emphasizes curriculum development and continuous improvement aligned with industry standards; active participation in professional development, institutional service, and program assessment; collaboration with faculty, staff, industry partners, and advisory boards; engagement in accreditation and grant-related activities; support for student access and workforce development; shared responsibility for the operation and upkeep of classrooms, laboratories, and equipment; and active involvement in student recruitment and community outreach in support of the College’s mission.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
50%&nbsp; A. Create instructional materials and laboratory experiences and teach courses at a variety of times in response to institutional needs, evaluate students’ progress toward achievement of stated student learning outcomes and inform them in a timely manner of their progress in the course, contribute to management of labs, and equipment, develop or update course syllabi for courses within the college guideline and curriculum as necessary to remain current with the industry, reviews, evaluates, and recommends student learning materials.&nbsp;
20% B. Responsible for professional development and institutional service as determined in consultation with the Department Head. Work with other faculty, staff, and local industries and organizations to continually refine and improve the Civil and Construction Engineering program. Such duties to be performed include: developing new course materials or courses as required to maintain program currency in emerging technologies in the field of Civil and Construction Engineering, and the development of coursework associated with it; completing assessment requirements relative to the program; engaging members of an active advisory board; participate in evaluating and preparing articulation agreements and prior learning assessments.
10% C. Provides access to students through posted office hours, electronic communication, and other appropriate methods, serve on internal and external committees for the College and the community at large. Work with Workforce and Community Development department to develop workforce solutions within the area of Civil and Construction Engineering.
10% D. Involvement in assessment and ATMAE accreditation process, writing grant proposals related to program goals and objectives, as well as participating in grant activities
&nbsp;5% E. Share responsibility for day-to-day operation and routine upkeep of classrooms, labs, and equipment. Perform related duties as assigned.
