Albany State University is seeking a dynamic and experienced Head Athletic Trainer to lead our athletic training program. The Head Athletic Trainer will work directly with athletics administration, coaches, physicians, dietitians, strength & conditioning personnel, and the university health center to deliver comprehensive healthcare and wellness services for Albany State University student-athletes. This individual will be responsible for the care, prevention, management, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic-related injuries and illnesses of Albany State University student-athletes for all 11 sports programs and cheerleading. 

The Head Athletic Trainer will have a wide range of clinic and administrative responsibilities which include prevention, evaluation, management, treatment, and rehabilitation of student-athletes; pre-participation physicals; inventory management of supplies and equipment; maintaining medical records; completing required insurance claims; daily interaction, communication, and relationship building with coaching, strength and conditioning coaches, physicians, athletic training staff and athletics administration; attending team practices and events; In addition, the position is responsible for the supervision of three full-time Certified Athletic Trainers and assigned Master of Athletic Training Students. The Head Athletic Trainer reports directly to the Director of Athletics.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage all athletic training services for the institution's athletic teams.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive injury prevention programs.
  • Evaluate, assess, and treat athletic injuries by developing and implementing preventative and rehabilitative programs.
  • Coordinates, schedules, and provides supervision of daily practices and game travel as permitted by NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Maintains appropriate electronic medical records and documentation of athletic training room records of injuries, treatment plans, and progress notes.
  • Serves as a liaison between team physician, coaches, and student-athletes in order to provide the best treatment for the student athlete and ensure a timely but safe return to sports. 
  • Organizes and performs annual physicals for all student-athletes.
  • Manages inventory and purchasing of medical supplies and equipment while maintaining the cleanliness of the facilities along with annual calibrations.
  • Performs administrative tasks and negotiates contracts for secondary insurance and team physicians. 
  • Implements updated policies consistent with NCAA and NATA.
  • Organizes and performs drug testing for institutional and NCAA compliance. 
  • Supervises full-time and PRN Certified Athletic Trainers, Master of Athletic Training students, and student-aid volunteers.
  • Submits and processes insurance medical claims for student-athletes and performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Sports or Healthcare, or other related field.
  • Certified Athletic Trainer by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification (NATABOC).
  • Licensed with the Georgia Board of Athletic Trainers.
  • Certified in CPR & First Aid.

  • Must provide a high level of customer service.
  • Knowledge of NCAA policies and regulations.
  • Knowledge of NATA policies and regulations.
  • Knowledge of local and state laws in terms of scope of practice.
  • Skilled in public speaking.
  • Strong Management and communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills with the ability to initiate, analyze, monitor and evaluate, and advance strategic plans that support student-athletes and the mission of ASU and the Department of Intercollegiate.
