Adjunct Instructor, Cosmetology
Title: Adjunct Instructor, Cosmetology, 12 month
Classification: Part-Time
Office Location: TCAT- McMinnville, 241 Vo Tech Dr., McMinnville, TN 37110
Hours: 4:00 pm-9:00 pm, Monday through Wednesday, or as needed to fulfill duties of the position.
Salary: Salary is commensurate with Tennessee College of Applied Technology salary guidelines.
Supervises: N/A
Reports to: Vice-President
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Graduate of an accredited Cosmetology program
- Current, valid Cosmetologist Licensure issued by the TN State Board of Cosmetology
- Current, valid Cosmetology Instructor’s License issued by the TN State Board of Cosmetology
- Minimum of three (3) years’ experience as a licensed Cosmetologist
- Commitment to maintaining license and program accreditation(s)
- Strong customer service skills: must possess effective oral and written communication skills to accurately convey information and to effectively present information.
- Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal working relationships with students, colleges, business and industry, faculty, staff, and the general public.
- Must have ability to utilize Microsoft Office programs, audio/visual equipment, and software.
- Must have the ability to multitask with good organization and planning skills.
- Passionate belief in the power of education along with the desire to help students achieve their academic, professional, and personal goals
Preferred Qualifications:
- Teaching, training, or salon management experience
- Experience in higher education
- Ability to establish and maintain relationships with multiple local businesses, employers, industry, workforce development agencies, secondary and post-secondary institutions.
- Possess valid TN driver’s license.
- Willing to travel as needed.
General Duties:
Key Responsibilities – Essential Job Functions
The Adjunct Instructor of Cosmetology is responsible for performing the following duties:
- Monitor and evaluate student progress, attendance, and grades.
- Complete and submit required reports in a timely manner.
- Maintain accurate and timely records mandated by the Tennessee State Board of Cosmetology.
- Ability to effectively apply a multi-method approach to enhance student understanding of materials, including demonstrations, lectures, hands-on activities, and experience in live works to provide the student with the knowledge to gain employment and licensure in the cosmetology industry.
- Ability to understand which teaching methods best serve the student’s needs, interests, and ability to learn.
- Ability to develop accurate and objective standards to measure learning or administer testing or other evaluations to determine effectiveness and ensure a high level of comprehension has been achieved.
- Ability to teach all courses within the cosmetology curriculum.
- Maintain student records for grades and attendance and enter these into the Banner system.
- Build and maintain relationships with area employers to facilitate the referral and employment of career and technical students.
- Cooperate with outside agencies; work with program advisory committees; conduct visits to business and industry; establish and maintain good public relations with the school’s general public.
- Work in cooperation with other departments and the community to enhance employment opportunities for students.
- Organizes class time effectively and efficiently in order that learning activities can be accomplished.
- Starts and ends class at designated time.
- Supervises student conduct to ensure that the potentially hazardous shops/labs/classrooms provide an orderly environment conducive to productivity.
- Maintains a well-organized, safe, and clean shop and/or classroom
- Investigates and makes a full report on every accident on the day the accident occurs, using the “Preliminary Accident Report Form.”
- Stays in close communication with the full-time program instructor and/or other adjunct instructors of the same course.
- Keeps and shares with students continuously updated records of competencies acquired during their enrollment.
- Evaluates each student’s progress at specific intervals (end of trimester) and completes permanent records.
- Helps students, as opportunities become available and known, in job placement for both full-time and part-time employment.
- Responsible for surveys, records, and reports of program graduates.
- Communicate effectively in a professional, tactful, and courteous manner with students, employees, faculty, and the general public.
- Ensure that all activities are conducted within the established guidelines of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
- Perform assigned responsibilities, duties, and tasks according to established practices, procedures, techniques, and standards in a safe manner and with minimal supervision.
- Participate in professional development and growth annually.
- Assist with student placement and follow-up information.
- Assist with student recruitment; and
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Background checks will be completed on all new hires. Instructors will be asked to sign a background release authorizing TCAT- McMinnville to complete a background check which will include the following: Sex Offender Registry, County Criminal &Federal Criminal.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions (ADA REQUIREMENTS)
Walking, climbing, bending, and stooping. Work performed in office, testing center and classroom environments. Position requires the use of a computer.
Sedentary Work – Walking or standing to a significant degree; sitting for brief periods of time; be able to bend and stoop; use body members (arms, hands, fingers).
SALARY: $25.00 - $35.00 per hour
